FARMINGTON - , 83, of 129 Orchard St., Farmington, a prominent, retired, third-generation lawyer, died on Oct. 12, of cancer.
He was born Aug. 15, 1925, son of the late Currier C. Holman and Rosa (Skillings) Holman at Farmington, his cherished hometown. He attended Farmington public schools where he was a member of the Farmington High School state championship basketball team of 1942. He graduated from Hebron Academy in the Class of 1943, where he played football.

LEWISTON - , "Popeye," 73, of 4 Winter St. Lisbon, died Tuesday, Oct. 7, at 2:20 p.m. at the Marshwood Nursing Home surrounded by his close family and his friends and Marshwood staff. He had courageously battled dementia/Alzheimer's for over two years, however he still recognized his boys, and finally succumbed to congestive heart failure at peace with his surroundings.
He was born in Lowell, Mass. on March 17, 1935, to Edward J. Field and Mary Rose Vigneault of Canada. He attended the Lisbon School system and enlisted in the U.S.Army completing his basic training at Fort Dix, N.J., in 1954. He was in the 3rd battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment APO7.

Frederick Joseph Smith of Portland, a mathematician and inventor who helped break Nazi secret codes, died Thursday. He was 82.
Mr. Smith's World War II unit was among the first to land in France on D-Day. He was member of the the 21st Weather Squadron, a unit of meteorologists who landed behind enemy lines so they could provide weather data to the Air Force.
