  • She could use a good therapist, but instead falls under the sway of a bad one: Dr. Finch (Brian Cox). [Deirdre Burroughs] all but worships the charlatan Svengali and ends up dumping now-adolescent [Augusten] (Joseph Cross) at Finch's filthy, rambling household. The young neat freak gazes in horror as Finch's wife, Agnes (Jill Clayburgh), eats dog food from the bag, but he finds an ally in her sexually precocious younger daughter, Natalie (Evan Rachel Wood) and forms a homosexual relationship with Finch's unstable adopted son, Neil (Joseph Fiennes). If the film has a target-and it's not clear that it does-it seems to be the indulgent excesses of the valium-popping Me Decade. The Finch house turns out to be a Neverland in ways more bad than good. Finch matter-of-factly points out the "mas...

  • Running with Scissors, written and directed by Ryan Murphy, is based on what the production notes call a "personal memoir" (as opposed to....an impersonal memoir?) by Augusten Burroughs. With an all-star cast (Annette Bening, Alec Baldwin, Gwyneth Paltrow, Joseph Fiennes), it claims to be a "blistering comedy" and a "deeply moving human drama. The period is the '70s, and the film starts with 6-year-old Augusten devotedly listening as his mother Deirdre (Bening) practices reading her banal little poems to an audience-Augusten. Convinced that she's destined for fame, Deirdre submits her work to magazines like the New Yorker, only to be devastated when it's rejected. What's wrong with these characters (and the script) is that instead of being funny they're boring. "All my life I've been o...

  • One of the most highly touted series of the fall season was the ABC drama "FlashForward." It arrived with the fascinating concept that for 2 minutes and 17 seconds everyone on the planet simultaneously lost consciousness and had a dreamlike flash-forward six months in the future (10 p.m. April 29, 2010, to be exact -- be sure to tune in to ABC on that night). It boasted a solid pedigree in co-creators David S. Goyer ("The Dark Knight") and Brannon Brago ("24") and such actors as Joseph Fiennes, Courtney B. Vance, John Cho, Shohreh Aghdashloo and two former "Lost" co-stars, Dominic Monaghan and Sonya Walger.

  • On the one hand, is comfortable, as it should be, with allowing [Augusten Burroughs] to tell [Natalie], without fanfare or trauma, that he's gay. On the other hand, we don't know he's still just 14 until well after he begins to sleep with Neil Bookman (Joseph Fiennes), who's 35. We join the lad's deflowering safely post-coitus, as Bookman tells him, "That's what gay men do. I just wanted you to know what you're in for." Trouble is, neither is nearly undressed enough to have just had sex. Even television characters pretend to be naked.

  • CELEBRITIES BORN ON THIS DAY: Joseph Fiennes, 38; Todd Bridges, 43; Adam Carolla, 44; Louis Gossett Jr., 72. Happy Birthday: Keeping everything equal in all aspects of your life will bring the greatest freedom. The ability to see things clearly and make beneficial decisions will allow you to pursue your dreams. Money matters can turn out well if you aren't too generous in an effort to win favors or for the sake of making an impression.

  • Simple enough: [Moli]ère's Molière, [Romain Duris] (The Beat That My Heart Skipped), is neither funny enough to be Ben Stiller nor handsome enough to be Joseph Fiennes (and vice versa), so the movie was buried before it even began. Playing comedy, Duris is as engaging as a bowl of porridge; playing tragedy, he's the height of comic absurdity. In scenes romantic, he's detached to the point of somnolence. I can only wonder what theatre gods Molière angered during his lifetime to deserve such ragtag biographical treatment, but let's hope Molière settles the debt.

  • [Seu Jorge] has gained great exposure through his work as an actor and soundtrack composer. In the film "City of God," he played Mane Galinna, also known as "Knockout Ned" and then played Pelé dos Santos in Wes Anderson's "The Life Aquatic with [Steve Zissou]." For this film, he provided much of the soundtrack in the form of Portuguese language cover versions of [David Bowie] classics. His last movie was "The Escapist," shot in Ireland with Brian Cox and Joseph Fiennes. His new album, "America Brasil," has a limited Brazilian release in 2007 under the label Canine' Gravadora. In the film "City of God," he played Mane Galinna, also known as "Knockout Ned" and then played Pelé dos Santos in Wes Anderson's "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.
