After a tee shot of more than 280 yards, Olazabal hit his best shot of the week. His 5-wood from 246 yards came to rest 18 inches from the hole, and the tap-in eagle putt briefly pulled him within one shot of Phil Mickelson.
LOVE CONQUERS ALL Davis Love III (above) will be named the next U.S. captain for golf's Ryder Cup team. The move isn't official yet, but Love has announced he's not going all the way to Europe just to kiss Jose Maria Olazabal's claret jugs.

Greg Norman disappearing from the Masters for six years was like George Clooney leaving "ER." The Shark - handsome, dashing, riveting in every way - was so much a part of the place. Plus, there was all that blood. Norman needed multiple transfusions, one bag of plasma after another, after finishing second three times and suffering a few other near misses. Heck, a couple of his corpuscles are probably still lying around the property (though Augusta National, I'm told, has a state-of-the-art drainage system). HONOLULU - Davis Love III didn't have much success against Jose Maria Olazabal as a player in the Ryder Cup. Now he gets to see how he fares against the Spaniard as a captain. Two officials involved with the selection process confirm Love will be the next U.S. captain. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the official announcement was not until Thursday at Medinah, where the 2012 matches will be played.
