After consideration of a joint paving program, Youngwood and New Stanton may need to rethink the possibility if the savings aren't substantial enough, officials said at Youngwood's council meeting Monday night.
Both boroughs spend about $150,000 each paving season, which may contribute to a total project too costly for any significant savings from what the boroughs would spend separately, said Emil Bove of Bove Engineering, which represents both municipalities.

Pittsburgh and Allegheny County officials have less than two weeks to resolve a standoff over a $1.4 million payment for shared software that officials tout as a money-saver for taxpayers.
The city's computerized accounting system is 14 years old, making it prone to failing and too old for its manufacturer to support, City Controller Michael Lamb said Wednesday. The city spent five years looking for a replacement, and honed in on a shared system with the county. But negotiations stalled in March when county officials asked the city to pay about $1.4 million up-front for training and technical support, Lamb said.

AUGUSTA -- Gov. Paul LePage on Tuesday expressed frustration with the pace and substance of deliberations over his proposed $220 million cuts at the Department of Health and Human Services.
In a highly unusual and unscripted move, LePage walked into the tail end of a joint work session between DHHS staff and the Legislature's budgetary and Health and Human Services committees. The governor did not speak during the session, but as lawmakers broke for lunch, he told reporters that legislators had yet to confront the "economic reality" of the current $120 million DHHS shortfall.

It's bound to happen at some point for working couples. One spouse gets the itch to retire or is forced to retire because of poor health or job loss. Since couples typically like to retire together, tough questions emerge: Should the other spouse retire, too, or continue working? What impact will retiring together have on the couple's income and future retirement benefits?
According to a July 2004 study by the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College, husbands and wives retire in the same year in one in five marriages, and half of all couples retire within two years of each other. As the study noted, married couples often try to retire together.
