As a general rule, I would recommend that you opt for the single-life annuity. You'll receive more money on a monthly basis, generally about 20-30 percent more. The trick is that you have to provide a provision for your spouse. By that I mean although you're receiving more money per month than you would under a joint and last survivor type of annuity, you don't want to spend the extra money. You want to invest it so that you can build a nest egg for your spouse. Over time the money will grow to equal far more than 50 percent of your benefit. Life is unpredictable.
