Converting Memorial Health System to a nonprofit has some appeal. For starters, doing so may lead to Memorial becoming a full-fledged teaching hospital for the University of Colorado hospital system. Bruce Schroffel, president and CEO of the University of Colorado Hospital Anschutz Medical Campus, told The Gazette's editorial department on Thursday that he is interested in a joint operating agreement involving Memorial and his system. For that to occur, he said, Memorial must be a nonprofit.
Federal prosecutors sued the Daily Gazette Co.--the owners of the Gazette--and MediaNews Group--the owners of the Daily Mail--in 2007 alleging they had violated a joint operating agreement both papers first entered in 1958. Prosecutors alleged that immediately after the transaction, the Gazette's owners began a campaign to financially cripple the Daily Mail by cutting subscriptions, shrinking the news staff and not promoting the paper to new subscribers.
