NASHVILLE - John Wilder, senator, lawyer, cotton planter and agribusinessman from tiny Mason, served as speaker of the state Senate longer than any presiding officer of a state or federal legislative body in the U.S. until his defeat in 2007 by Tennessee's first Republican Senate speaker since Reconstruction.
The senator's announcement Thursday that he won't run for re- election after 44 years marked the next chapter in the end of an era in state government and the eight-county district east of Memphis. It hasn't had a different senator since Lyndon Johnson was president and the words "suburban sprawl" were unknown in Fayette County.

Cars parked along the shoulder of U.S. 64, backing up traffic for a half-mile, and about 600 people squeezed into the chapel at Peebles Funeral Home. As more than one speaker noted, they represented many ages, races and creeds, and in the more than 88 years he spent on this earth, Wilder found a way to influence those lives and millions more as a state senator, Senate speaker and the nation's longest-serving lieutenant governor.
