Might it not still be possible to blend the practical and psychological preferences of both peoples for a two-state solution with some of the best aspects of a humane one-state solution to produce a vision of a possible future so bright and appealing that both Israelis and Palestinians would be inspired to act on their hopes and dreams, rather than their memories and fears, and to seize this future together and make it a reality? Israelis, Palestinians and the true friends of both must now resist the temptation to despair, raise their sights and pursue a compelling vision of a society so much better than the status quo that both Israelis and Palestinians are inspired to accept in their hearts and minds that peace is both desirable and attainable, that the Holy Land can be shared, that ...

At the president's request, a panicky Congress, swept along by the public's passion for a decisive military response to 9/11, endowed him with unprecedented powers, the authority to order pre-emptive acts of war, violate fundamental principles of international law, and ignore cherished constitutional guarantees. Dennis Ross, recently named as Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton's special adviser on Iran, is publicly on the record as favoring a brief but visibly intensified diplomatic effort to persuade Iran to bow to Israeli/American demands-which would, inevitably and necessarily, be unsuccessful-before proceeding on to the attack on Iran that he deems essential to protect Israel's security interests.

[...] religion ceased in Zionist eyes to be the primary measure of Jewish identity. In the land which, until 1948, was called Palestine, democracy and equal rights, coupled with freedom of choice (with attractive choices for resettlement being generously provided) for those who would prefer not to live in such a state, would offer a far greater hope for eventual peace in the Middle East than continued cynical recycling of a partition-based "peace process" which is now widely recognized to be both a fraud and a farce and which, even if "successful," would simply legitimize, reward and perpetuate ethnic cleansing, racism and apartheid-scarcely a recipe for lasting peace, let alone for any measure of justice.

Traumatized by the Holocaust and perceived insecurity as a Jewish island in an Arab sea, Israelis have immense psychological problems in coming to grips with the practical impossibility of sustaining eternally what most of mankind, composed as it is of peoples who have themselves been victims of colonialism and racism, view as an abomination: a racial-supremicist, settler-colonial regime founded upon the ethnic cleansing of an indigenous population.

According to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, Emanuel's father, Dr. Benjamin Emanuel, was a member of Menachem Begin's Irgun forces, famous for the Deir Yassin massacre and the bombing of the King David Hotel, and named his son after "a Lehi combatant who was killed"-i.e., a member of Yitzhak Shamir's Stern Gang, responsible for, in addition to atrocities against Palestinians, the assassination of the U.N. peace envoy Count Folke Bernadotte. Why would he wish to disabuse the Muslim world of its hopes (however modest) and slap it across the face at the earliest opportunity? A further contemptuous message was rumored to be imminent in an early December article in Haaretz, based on information attributed to "a senior Israeli diplomatic source"-the appointment as Obama's personal envoy for "...

If you have a source that positively identifies my father as the officer who said, "It became necessary to destroy the town to save it," I would like to see it. Since my father's death, my siblings and I take great interest in any historical references that mention our dad. [...] I hope you will accept my most sincere apology, and I will ask the editor of Washington Report to print this letter retracting my association of your father with what you so rightly call 'that infamous statement.' The Washington Report sincerely regrets the error as well.

Whitbeck opines that if one views the world through the eyes of Israeli and Western governments and media, one is likely to beleive that the primary obstacle to Middle East peace has been Fatah's failure to "dismantle the infrastructure of terror" and has now become Hamas' desire for the "destruction of Israel." He stresses that a greater obstacle is the failure to question what such phrases actually mean and to move beyond them to rational thought.
