Gwen Hankerson, chairperson of the African-American Research Library & Cultural Center's Elder's Council advisory board, has organized a group of community members to fight the recent firing of the center's former executive director, Alicia Antone. The group will appeal to county commissioners at the Feb. 5 regular meeting to have Antone reinstated. Antone was abruptly fired on Jan. 2 without explanation. Several donors and benefactors to the library are reconsidering their plans to donate more to the facility because of Antone's termination. The race for the District 7 seat is headlined by incumbent John Rodstrom, Fort Lauderdale City Commissioner Carlton Moore and Davie Councilman Bryan Caletka. Rodstrom's critics say he has not done enough to build consensus on the commission, thereby hampering the commission's effectiveness. The sitting commissioner's strongest advantage is his campaign fundraising machine. Rodstrom had raised $196,018.31 as of his last campaign report. FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. An absentee ballot was mailed with what may have been a rare stamp worth as much as $200,000 the famous Inverted Jenny but the envelope is in a box that by law cannot be opened. Broward County Commissioner John Rodstrom discovered the stamp while reviewing absentee ballots. The envelope did not contain a name, so the vote did not count.

When former NBA star Tim Hardaway went on a rant of hatred against gays, sports radio station 790 'The Ticket' released the tape of his statements and marketed it over the country. As a resuit, Hardaway was fired from his NBA jobs, stripped of some of his business interests and left a crippled outcast in the sports world. Last week 790 'The Ticket's' sportscaster Joe Rose, who is white, was accused of making comments about how light-skinned blackwomen are preferred over dark skinned black women and even black men prefer "redbones" over the "chocolates." FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) -- An absentee ballot was mailed with what may have been a rare stamp worth as much as $200,000 -- the famous Inverted Jenny -- but the envelope is in a box that by law can't be opened. Two homeowners got the County to install and reimburse them for irrigation systems in the front of their property. They both called the County to complain and received a satisfactory response to their problems. "If you don't call me I won't know about it," [John Rodstrom] added.
