  • Gwen Hankerson, chairperson of the African-American Research Library & Cultural Center's Elder's Council advisory board, has organized a group of community members to fight the recent firing of the center's former executive director, Alicia Antone. The group will appeal to county commissioners at the Feb. 5 regular meeting to have Antone reinstated. Antone was abruptly fired on Jan. 2 without explanation. Several donors and benefactors to the library are reconsidering their plans to donate more to the facility because of Antone's termination. I have no recollection of any other manager ever being treated this way by a county administrator. The secrecy surrounding Antone's dismissal raises questions, and is fueling suspicion in a department already suffering from low morale. This is ...

  • It took compromise in order for the majority of Commissioners to reach an agreement as to how far we were willing to cut Broward County services and jobs. We have to realize that there are quality of life issues here," said Commissioner Kristin Jacobs. "TJhese cuts minimize the overall adverse impact on taxpayers and County services. The vast majority of homeowners will see a decrease in their County property taxes. Next year we Know we face even more economic challenges. Commissioners [Lois Wexler], Kristin Jacobs, Ilene Lieberman, Albert C. Jones and Vice Mayor Sue Gunzburger voted in favor of the finalized budget, which increased the property millage rate by approximately 3 percent from the year before. Mayor Ken Keechl voted against an increase in property taxes along with Commiss...

  • The race for the District 7 seat is headlined by incumbent John Rodstrom, Fort Lauderdale City Commissioner Carlton Moore and Davie Councilman Bryan Caletka. Rodstrom's critics say he has not done enough to build consensus on the commission, thereby hampering the commission's effectiveness. The sitting commissioner's strongest advantage is his campaign fundraising machine. Rodstrom had raised $196,018.31 as of his last campaign report. Caletka's campaign focuses on fiscal responsibility as its primary selling point. Caletka, a school teacher, says that he is the only candidate who has never voted to increase taxes. He is telling voters that he was against the expansion of Fort LauderdaleHollywood International Airport, and that he wants to do more to punish what he calls "dirty develope...

  • FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. An absentee ballot was mailed with what may have been a rare stamp worth as much as $200,000 the famous Inverted Jenny but the envelope is in a box that by law cannot be opened. Broward County Commissioner John Rodstrom discovered the stamp while reviewing absentee ballots. The envelope did not contain a name, so the vote did not count.

  • When former NBA star Tim Hardaway went on a rant of hatred against gays, sports radio station 790 'The Ticket' released the tape of his statements and marketed it over the country. As a resuit, Hardaway was fired from his NBA jobs, stripped of some of his business interests and left a crippled outcast in the sports world. Last week 790 'The Ticket's' sportscaster Joe Rose, who is white, was accused of making comments about how light-skinned blackwomen are preferred over dark skinned black women and even black men prefer "redbones" over the "chocolates." Its unlikely Rose meant anything by those remarks, but he probably was not aware that blacks view such comments with suspicion, particularly when made by a white male. It is taken, by some, to mean that since a light-skinned person may h...

  • FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) -- An absentee ballot was mailed with what may have been a rare stamp worth as much as $200,000 -- the famous Inverted Jenny -- but the envelope is in a box that by law can't be opened. Broward County Commissioner John Rodstrom discovered the stamp while reviewing absentee ballots. There was no name on the envelope, so the vote didn't count.

  • The event was advertised at the candidate's forum held in January in the Commission chambers at Fort Lauderdale's City Hall. Rodstrom, the wife of Broward County's Commissioner John Rodstrom, participated in January's forum and said she'd do so again in March at the AARLCC. Rodstrom is running to represent District II in the city of Fort Lauderdale. We confirmed with the candidates twice before the event," said President of Council of Fort Lauderdale Civic Associations, Eugenia Ellis, who sponsored the forum with the Right Group. "We found it extremely disrespectful to the residents of Fort Lauderdale. Mrs. Rodstrom saw one of our board members at the State of the City address and again confirmed her attendance. In an e-mail found purely by accident, she said it wasn't in her dist...

  • Two homeowners got the County to install and reimburse them for irrigation systems in the front of their property. They both called the County to complain and received a satisfactory response to their problems. "If you don't call me I won't know about it," [John Rodstrom] added. On the question of annexation, Rodstrom said in the past it had been handled locally, now the Florida legislature is considering the question. "You see what happened to Weston. It made it worse. When things get smaller, you have less. We'll find out where people want to go. We will put it to a straw ballot," said Rodstrom. We've adopted a three-year phase in plan for annexation into Lauderdale Lakes. We want to lessen the financial impact of adding new residents. We don't want to look to the County to ...

  • I'm ready to go the war path with Broward County. This is not an issue of money. We have the money to make this happen. Thanks to Congressman Alcee Hastings, the City of Fort Lauderdale, the Community Redevelopment Agency we've had $7 million sitting waiting to be used in our community. All we need is John Rodstrom to stop holding things up," [Carlton Moore] said. At the meeting Moore also informed residents of his annual Christmas toy drive. He's hoping to raise $20,000 this year. In addition to gifts for every aged child, there will be two scholarships of $600 to $1,200 for two to attend Broward Community College. "We wanted to also significantly help a child to attend college. If this can assist them and inspire them to keep going that is what we'll do," he said. "We get up ...
