The column by John Passacantando of Greenpeace and the accompanying syndicated cartoon ("Drilling harms fragile ecosystems," Dec 6) are very misleading and very much out of touch with modern oil-drilling technology.
The days of gushers spewing oil over the landscape are long gone. Modern directional and horizontal drilling technology now allow draining oil from a 5-mile circle from a very small area for the drilling and production equipment. A few years ago, Conoco-Phillips (then Phillips Petroleum) developed the Alpine Field on the North Slope of Alaska from a 50-acre (0.078 of a square mile) footprint to drain oil from 80 square miles.
