With money tight and two years of painful cuts under its belt, the School Board is already looking at next year's finances and weighing potential goals, including the now-perennial issue of employee salary increases.
School employees are in their fourth year with no pay increase. At a board work session this month, Chief Financial Officer John Maniscalco said a 1 percent increase would cost $2.2 million. The division's total budget this year is $290 million.

Madison is the penultimate stop on the 30-day, 30-city tour, which Vaughn describes as equal parts "traveling circus" and "old-school variety show." Vaughn handpicked the four comedians joining him on stage, all frequent performers at Hollywood's Comedy Store: Bret Ernst, John Caparulo, Sebastian Maniscalco and Ahmed Ahmed. The 2009-10 school year has barely begun, but the Norfolk division is already thinking about the budget for 2010-11. Not surprisingly, it's looking pretty tight.
At a public hearing Wednesday, Chief Financial Officer John Maniscalco outlined some of the challenges for the budget, which is funded through city, state and federal money.
