JANESVILLE, Wis. - John A. "Jack" Mair, 80, of Packwaukee, formerly of Janesville, died Thursday, Aug. 18, 2005, at Heartland Health Care Center, Platteville. Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Schneider Apfel Schneider & Schneider Funeral Home, Janesville, where friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday.
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. - It was hard to tell who was more surprised and thrilled, Ted P. Wilkison or Mike Mair, Thursday afternoon in Platteville. The fourth statue, of eight, in Platteville's Veterans Honor Roll was unveiled at the Platteville Area Chamber of Commerce office. The sailor has the likeness of Mair's father, John, who served aboard the USS Mississinewa (AO-59), an oiler. On Nov. 20, 1944, the Mississinewa was struck by a Kaiten (an Imperial Japanese Navy manned suicide torpedo), became engulfed in flames and subsequently sank with a loss of 63 Americans and the Japanese Kaiten pilot. John survived the sinking, and Mike, a naval historian, author and resident of Platteville, wrote a book "Oil, Fire and Fate - The sinking of the USS Mississinewa in WWII by Japan's Secret Weapon.

United Transportation Union Local 15 officials are suing Big Sky Airlines and its parent corporation, MAIR Holdings Inc. of Minneapolis, in U.S. District Court in Billings. Billings attorney John Heenan filed the lawsuit on behalf of 150 former Big Sky contract pilots and dispatchers in federal court because airline labor contracts are governed by the U.S. Railway Labor Act.
