Two Republican candidates for state office -- joined by Rep. Scott Garrett, R-Wantage -- schmoozed potential voters Friday at two Paramus diners in advance of November's election. Garrett accompanied Bergen County Freeholder Chairman John Driscoll and Hawthorne Mayor Rich Goldberg, who are running for state Senate and the Assembly, respectively, in the 38th District for Friday morning's meet and greet.
Joseph Pallipurath was an angry man on a deadly mission when he left on a cross-country trip from Sacramento, Calif., to New Jersey in November 2008, a prosecutor told jurors Thursday as Pallipurath went on trial for allegedly killing two people and seriously wounding another in Clifton. A soured marriage between Pallipurath and 24-year-old Reshma James began in India and eventually led to James going her own way, moving in with cousin Silvy Perincheril in Hawthorne. "He felt cheated out of his marriage," said Passaic County Chief Assistant Prosecutor John Latoracca in opening statements before jurors and state Superior Court Judge Salem Ahto in Paterson. "He was angry, he was resentful, and he just let that build.
Speculation on who will be Jerry Speziale's replacement as candidate for Democratic sheriff on the Passaic County ballot spun full tilt in political circles last week. And the one name that has grown from sleeper to an A-list contender is state Sen. John Girgenti, the veteran lawmaker from Hawthorne. No one would ever accuse the low-key Girgenti of having the public-relations panache of Speziale, whose abrupt departure for a top post at the Port Authority Police Department stunned the somnolent world of Passaic County politics last week.
HAWTHORNE -- A 15-minute encounter on Nov. 18, 2007, nearly ended the 24-year public-service career of Paterson City Councilwoman Vera Ames-Garnes, but a judge late Thursday decided not to remove her from office. Hawthorne Municipal Judge John Meola ruled that while hours earlier he had found her guilty of obstruction of justice and disorderly conduct, Ames-Garnes' conduct during those 15 minutes was not enough to strip her of official duties.
