[...] strong were these ties that by the 1850s attacks on the "peculiar institution" were interpreted as assaults on the South in general.16 Many southern slave owners became increasingly alarmed, and, as one historian noted, South Carolina slaveholders and non-slaveholders, for example, came to view themselves as "under siege" by anti-slavery proponents, especially the abolitionists.17 Many southern leaders, including newspaper editors, believed that the anti-slavery politics of the increasingly powerful Republican Parry, which had gained national prominence by asserting, among other things, that a "slave power" conspiracy burdened the entire nation, fueled the abolitionism of men such as Brown.

NORFOLK - John Preston "Jack" Harper Jr., 58, died March 10, 2006, in a local hospital.
He was born in Norfolk. He was a 1965 honor graduate of Maury High School. He graduated from Duke University, magna cum laude in 1969 and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He received a master's degree in engineering from Duke University in 1971. He served as a Naval officer in the Seabees from 1971 to 1974. He was a consulting structural engineer for Abiouness, Cross and Bradshaw Inc. and was formerly the president of Fraioli, Blum, Yesselman Associates Inc.
