High above southern Columbia, geometric shapes reign. Sporting various colors, shapes and sizes, these tethered creations flap in the breeze at the hands of Missouri kite enthusiasts such as John Grimshaw.
An 11-year veteran of kite flying, John waited for the right wind Saturday to fly his sport kite with friend Jerry Rowden.

Snug as a bug in my sun-filled studio, I am traveling back in time, tracing the history of flowering plants in gardens around the world. With John Grimshaw's "The Gardener's Atlas" open in my lap, I am on the world's first recorded plant-hunting expedition -- a mission organized by Egyptian Queen Hatshepsut in 1495 B.C. to the Land of Punt in eastern Africa -- on a quest for incense-bearing plants. My eyes shift to a map of Africa and the region around the Great Rift Valley -- a region of tropical woodland and grasslands that is the home of President Barack Obama's Kenyan ancestors.
Obama's book, "Dreams From My Father," concludes with his first trip to Africa in 1993 to learn the stories of his long-absent Kenyan father. In Nairobi, he goes with his half sister Auma to the downtown cit...

Kids aren't in peril
I completely agree with the letter from John Grimshaw (Sept. 24). There are bigger issues in the city to deal with rather than worry about Priscilla's or Some Like It Hot. What adults do in the privacy of their own homes is their business, not the business of everyone in Topeka. Who cares who shops there?

Rarely do major paintings leave museums for private galleries. But M.S. Rau Antiques on Royal Street has acquired a collection of 19th and early 20th century paintings by 10 artists: John Atkinson Grimshaw, John William Godward, Daniel Ridgeway Knight, Adolphe Alexander Lesrel, John Frederick Herring Sr., Alfred De Breanski Sr., Alphonse Gaudefroy, Harry Brooker, Montague Dawson and Edgar Hunt.
Purchased by a collector over a number of years, the paintings will sell individually between $125,000 and $650,000 apiece, said Bill Rau, owner of the French Quarter antiques store. Stapleton Park, an 1883 oil on canvas painting by Grimshaw has literally been stopping patrons in their tracks to stare, Rau said.

HULL, Mass. - The former summer home of President Kennedy's grandfather was auctioned for $950,000 to a developer of luxury condominiums, two real estate agents said.
Ernesto Caparrotta was the winning bidder Tuesday for the eight- bedroom, 7,163-square foot mansion, once owned by John "Honey Fitz" Fitzgerald, according to local real estate agents Peter Kirk and Tom Grimshaw.
