Not many people follow their bliss, but of those who do, artist John Farnsworth is a perfect example. Farnsworth is rounding on his 40th year as a full-time artist and his zest for art is infectious. He is interested in all genres, be that cowboy, surrealist, abstract expressionist, impressionist or minimalist, saying the only thing that matters is whether the artist is true to his or her own vision. During the past several years, his paintings of horses have featured heads and the relationships of their shapes to each other. Backgrounds have been almost nonexistent in the close-up, tightly cropped groupings he's painted for more than 20 years. Along with the paintings by Sally Russell, works by artists Clarence Medina and John Farnsworth can be seen in a special exhibit that opens with a reception Saturday (Oct. 4), from 4-7 p.m. The beginning of autumn has not escaped the eyes of Russell and Medina, who have created new works en plein aire along Taos' roads, "painting the contrasting violet and yellow of the New Mexico fall," says Russell. "The trees have an inner glow as the sun fades in the west, spreading golden fire through the trees." Their work aims to "capture the first and last rays of the sun as it hits the warm adobe of the chapels and mountains of the countryside.
