Permit me to make an assertion, and then allow me to mention a few things that we already know, but which may require an occasional reminder.
First, the assertion: President Barack Obama's current vacation in Martha's Vineyard is entirely justified, and the criticism that it has spawned largely from, but not limited to, the right is unwarranted.

Alternatives to violence can work
I don't disagree with much John M. Crisp says in his Aug. 30 Viewpoint column "Mennonites have right to conviction," regarding the decision at Goshen College to play "America the Beautiful" rather than "The Star-Spangled Banner" at athletic events. But when he writes "I'm not sure . the principle of pacifism is entirely realistic," some vital historical evidence is ignored. He seems to imply that we should be respectful of Mennonites and others who choose alternatives to violence, but that we should not take alternatives to war and violence too seriously.

On a crisp, sunny morning, worshippers at St. John Fisher Church in Churchill were coming to grips with a dark reality: Their new pastor, the Rev. Bartley Sorensen, had been arrested on child pornography charges.
It's painful. People have worked so hard at this church," said Richard Yescavage as members filed out of a Sunday morning Advent Mass that featured a Nativity staged by a group of church preschoolers.

NEW YORK - Theodore C. Sorensen, the studious, star-struck aide and alter ego to President John F. Kennedy whose crisp, poetic turns of phrase helped idealize and immortalize a tragically brief administration, died Sunday. He was 82.
Wife Gillian Sorensen says he died at noon at a New York hospital from complications of a stroke.

Animals have right to live, too
I've been wanting to thank you for picking up John Crisp's "Behaving like animals" (Other Views, Jan. 8), his article about humans' treatment of animals, based on the case of Tatiana, the San Francisco Zoo tiger who was seemingly trying to defend herself when she escaped her confined area.

ARCADIA - Crisp, a 3-year-old daughter of El Corredor, outran the 1-2 favorite Blind Luck on Saturday at Santa Anita and punched her ticket to the Kentucky Oaks on April 30 at Churchill Downs in the process.
Fitted with blinkers so she could race closer to the pace in a race trainer John Sadler felt was devoid of speed, Crisp rallied from second to overtake pacesetter All Due Respect by a neck and win the $250,000 Grade III Santa Anita Oaks for 3-year-old fillies.
