SPRING LAKE, N.C. - It was America's fifth-bloodiest war, yet today, 60 years later, it is more often than not just considered "America's Forgotten War." Sixty years later, the American public seems to remember it, if at all, as a conflict occurring sometime between World War II and Vietnam, or maybe as the background for the 1970s TV show "M-A-S-H" (actually a Vietnam War story only superficially set in Korea). World War II had ended in victory celebrations across the nation, and even the Vietnam War has about it something of a 1960s dramatic, romantic aura: peace, love, drugs, youth, protest ("Where Have All the Flowers Gone?"). By contrast, the Korean War (195053) was a part of the supposedly bland 1950s.

Indeed, the title of a new book by Dr. Drew Pinksy, host of "Celebrity Rehab" and "Loveline," says it all: "The Mirror Effect: How Celebrity Narcissism is Seducing America." I mean, who really cares about bubbleheads such as Lindsay Lohan or Britney Spears, and who Alex Rodriguez is dating when not admiring himself in the mirror? Not me. In a word, TV news sucks. It is pathetic. Peter Finch, in his Academy Award-winning role as anchorman Howard Beale in 1976's "Network," had it right. And I, too, often feel like going to the window, throwing it open and yelling, "I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this any- more. Those familiar with "Network," which copped seven Oscar nominations, know how closely it resembles what's happening today. Best Actress winner Faye Dunaway, as an a...

Politicians have extraordinary shoulder joints that enable them to pat themselves on the back, and last week the president, a master of that calisthenic, performed it in the Rose Garden. His subject - aside from himself, as usual - was the bill by which Congress authorized the Food and Drug Administration to regulate tobacco. The president called this "a bill that truly defines change in Washington" and "changes the way Washington works and who Washington works for. Our leaders are often wrong but rarely so precisely wrong. In two important particulars the bill is a crystalline example of Washington business as usual - the protection of the strong. The bill was supported by America's biggest tobacco company and by the Democratic Party's fountain of funds, the trial bar.

Yet, FNC's news programs do play it straight with "We Report, You Decide." And its right-leaning, primetime purveyors of opinion - [Sean Hannity], the acerbic Bill O'Reilly and Goody TwoShoes Greta Van Susteren - are "fair and balanced" by booking liberal and conservative guests. I don't include the hyper, far-right, over-the-top Glenn Beck, who admits he is not a journalist. Besides, Beck's 5 p.m. FNC show doesn't air in primetime. For example, someone identified as an unnamed "TV insider" was quoted as saying that "[Lou Dobbs] was polluting the CNN brand." Another said Dobbs was at odds with CNN President Jonathan Klein over a memo to Dobbs' staff ordering them to deep-six "birther" stories alleging that [Hussein Obama] was not born in the United States. Said the mystery source: "They...

In one recent week, NBC reported on SUV safety, CBS looked at African American college enrollment and ABC covered efforts to clean up Yosemite National Park-stories that could appeal to a wide range of viewers. On one recent evening, ABC's Miguel Marquez reported on a lull in the violence in one part of the country, while CBS' David Martin focused on a rocket attack on the U.S. base in Baghdad and NEC's Jim Miklaszewski covered the Marine Corps' lobbying campaign to move its troops from Iraq to Afghanistan.

ONE of Anne Barths congressional campaign commercials features a picture of President Bush smooching incumbent Shelley Moore Capito on the cheek. In another Barth commercial, a man sets a spell in a rocker beside a young whippersnapper who disparages Capitos ties to Bush. The man holds up a newspaper to conceal his face. It is a scene reminiscent of Tim Taylors neighbor on Tool Time. Then the paper is lowered to reveal none other than Big Daddy, replete in straw hat and suspenders. All along, Capito has run ads stressing her defiance of Bushs wishes on several occasions. Another shows Capito, against a backdrop of OPEC potentates, talking forthrightly of her desire to lift limits on oil drilling. And now, Capitos people have swung back at Barth. A new spot features a most unflattering h...
