Most NBA players responded to [John Amaechi]'s statement with heartening affirmation, and he has characterized the response he's received in general as overwhelmingly positive. That positive response is extremely important, given how desperately Black America needs to come together to protect itself from the devastation of HIV/AIDS.
Sadly, however, some in our community still haven't gotten the memo. And former Miami Heat star Tim Hardaway appears to be among those left out of the know. In a Valentine's Day radio appearance, he responded to a question about Amaechi's laudable honesty with his own shameful vitriol. "I hate gay people," Hardaway boasted. "I don't like to be around gay people. I am homophobic. I don't like it. It shouldn't be in the world or in the United States.

I don't know of many dads who don't like sports, so a book about his favorite pastime will make him happy. If he loves buckets, be sure to look for Man in the Middle by John Amaechi (ESPN Books), a biography about a secretly gay NBA star. For the father who likes to drown worms, give him Beneath the Surface: A Natural History of a Fisherman's Lake by Bruce M. Carlson (Minnesota Historical Society Press). For the dad with ideas of grandeur, he'll fight to read The Gladiators by Fik Meijer (Thomas Dunne Books). Filled with history, archaeology, and sport, it's also easy on the wallet, at just under fifteen bucks. If Dad is counting the days 'til football season, you can get him through this very trying time by giving him The Best Show in Football: the 19461955 Cleveland Browns by Andy Pia...

The way [John Amaechi] figured it, he'd done well for an athlete not all that athletic. He stood in awe of what Shaq and Malone and Jordan did. "Hey, I don't even like to sweat," he said. For a website chat with fans, Amaechi wrote: "I would love to win an NBA championship. However, I was the fat 17-year-old British kid who couldn't play basketball. So if I don't win one, I won't feel like, with what I've done, that I've missed out too badly.

Chuck: Besides recently sharing with us that he's among the planet's tallest gay men, former Jazzman John Amaechi also had some unflattering things to say about both Utah coach Jerry Sloan and team owner Larry H. Miller.
But Big John might as well have taken his axe to some titanium as criticizing the duo did nothing to dent their iconic standing locally.

John Amaechi's recently published autobiography, "Man in the Middle" (ESPN Books), chronicles his difficult upbringing, his discovery of basketball (in England, no less), and his "Plan" to become a professional basketball player and do something for the world in the process.
Ironically, a subtext of the book has captured more attention than the primary text. John Amaechi is gay.

DENVER -- When John Amaechi told the world he was gay, he steeled himself for a torrent of negativity that never really materialized, the former pro basketball player told the GOP's largest gay organization Saturday.
I underestimated America. I braced myself for the wrath of a nation under God," Amaechi said at the Log Cabin Republicans' annual convention. "I imagined that it would be a firestorm, that it would be some insane number of letters demanding my deportation or my death.
