A group of London and Swiss producers currently is staging a live outdoor musical version of "Heidi,' the classic story of a spunky Swiss orphan who goes to live with her grouchy grandfather. The producers chose the second-best location for this spectacle, namely Walenstadt, Switzerland, where author Johanna Spyri set her original story in 1880.
LifeHouse Theater continues its 12th season with the return of "Heidi," opening at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 29. Inspired by the classic Johanna Spyri novel set in the Swiss Alps, this award- winning musical by LifeHouse founder Wayne Scott tells the tale of an orphaned girl forced to live with her hermit grandfather. Snatched away by a scheming distant relative who plots to use the girl's natural warmth for financial gain, Heidi is then thrust into a strange world of wealth as she is made to care for the invalid daughter of a businessman. The grandfather's pursuit to reunite with Heidi, mysteries surrounding his past, a supposedly haunted mansion and Heidi's final destiny all combine in a story for the whole family.
Taubman Museum of Art Executive Director David Mickenberg covered a lot of ground during the museum's May 18 town hall meeting. He announced the launch of a new membership campaign, and said the museum still has $595,683 to raise over the next six months to meet its budgetary needs. Goodness is one of the hardest things to convey in life and onstage, but Imagination Stage's nimble musical version of the classic 1880 children's novel "Heidi" renders the virtue with lightness and grace. From the singing goats and the subtle oompah-pah strains of Joan Cushing's score (and her devilishly clever lyrics) to Tara Giordano's nuanced performance as the sunniest little girl this side of the Swiss Alps, there's plenty to yodel about in this production.

A dream can be so wonderful that we want to sleep forever -- except when it turns to nightmare. But what if being roused didn't mean a return to safety, but waking to a world chill with horror? Bellini's La sonnambula at the Santa Fe Opera Saturday, with the magnificent French soprano Natalie Dessay in the title role, offered one possible outcome. Director-designer Stephan Grgler's provocative production, logical within its self-drawn lines, is a good example of Regietheater, where an artistic concept takes precedence over a literal rendering of the story. It's not something seen often at SFO, and as an art form it can be self-indulgent.
