  • The quartet Masada, here in its acoustic mode, embodies the core spirit of [JOHN ZORN]'s work. Dave Douglas (trumpet), Greg Cohen (bass) and Joey Baron (drums) have been with Zorn since the early days, performing their first concert in 1993. Zorn and his creative partners now enjoy a fanatical fandom, as evidenced by an excited man down front who bolted upright for a standing ovation as the group first entered the stage.

  • One of the first best records of next year will be a double CD, one a duo and one a quartet setting, co-led by guitar masters Jim Hall and Bill Frisell. The double disc, "Hemispheres," arrives Jan. 6 via the fan-driven innovative ArtistShare label. The effort, which took 18 months to record - a startlingly long time for any jazz record; most sessions are recorded in a day or two - is sure to gain immediate and remarkable attention not simply because of the fantastic delivery by the two guitarists and subsequently by bassist Scott Colley and drummer Joey Baron, who contribute ably to the second disc, but also because of the session's historical significance. This is a meeting of the minds - one a modern-thinking, consummate player who arrives via the bebop tradition; the other who, next ...

  • MYRIAM ALTER Where Is There (Enja) Alter's fifth album, and her second on the German Enja label, has a steadfastly romantic flavor. Alter grew up hearing music from all over the world, and global influences can be heard on her CDs, all of which feature her own compositions. She played piano on her first two albums; it's Salvatore Bonafede playing here. He is joined by the Brazilian cellist Jacques Morelenbaum and the Belgian soprano saxophonist Pierre Vaiana, as well as by Alter's previous collaborators, clarinetist John Ruocco, bassist Greg Cohen, and drummer Joey Baron. The first song, "Was It There," is characteristic of the album's music, with its frequent shifts in tempo and instrumentation. It opens with Bonafede playing call-and-response on his own, which yields to an upbeat them...

  • Josephine and Edward Olejniczak's lives were woven together from their childhoods on the same East Side street, through a war, the births of seven children, a move to the country and almost 63 years of marriage. They were inseparable in life, and their children wondered how they could ever live without each other.

  • Rock Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, "The Expanded Collectors Editions" (EMI). EMI launches the third set of dramatically altered and expanded editions of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' oeuvre, as part of a campaign that will see the Australian icon's complete catalog reissued and remixed in 5.1 surround sound. Cave -- a legend in alternative music circles, and one of the progenitors of the noir- alternative that eventually became rather unfortunately known as goth-rock -- is a poet of the macabre and a songwriter able to marry gorgeous melodies to themes of heartbreak and desolation. This latest series covers the four albums that are, for my money, the finest Cave recorded with his Bad Seeds -- starting with 1994's "Let Love In," and covering the subsequent releases "Murder Ball...

  • Hall made his name as a straight-ahead jazz player who has made well-received forays into Third Wave classical-jazz fusion and the avantgarde, while Frisell made his name as a mainstay of the ECM Records stable while also making significant contributions to New York's forbidding downtown avantrock scene before moving deeper and deeper into a personal interpretation of country and Americana sounds.

  • New Mexico venues this weekend host a dynamic trio of music makers -- guitarist Bill Frisell, violinist Eyvind Kang, and oud player Rahim AlHaj -- focusing on a collaborative piece called The Baghdad/Seattle Suite. For Frisell, at least, it represents a rare opportunity to concentrate on something in a relatively relaxing manner. We had five days in Minneapolis just last month," he said by telephone. "It was a fantastic kind of situation at the Walker Art Center. That was where the music really came together. There are little ideas that we all brought, and we had time to get into it without the pressure. I mean, so many things these days seems like you show up the day of the thing and you just have to go for it and do whatever you can do. Probably 99 percent of what I do is like that, ...
