Jerry Joe Greenwell has been training way too long to consider anything a sure bet in horse racing.
But the 66-year-old Waverly, Ky., resident was certain of one fact after the fifth race on opening day at Ellis Park. "Right now, I'm tied for leading trainer," he said with a laugh after his 8- yearold mare Bold Peaks got her 11th lifetime win. "That means it's a good summer so far." Ellis Park officials were saying the same thing after opening their 88th meet, which is scheduled to include 31 racing dates from Saturday through Labor Day. A crowd estimated between 4,500 and 5,000 arrived early, and the only real glitch was a balky air-conditioning unit in half of the Sky Theatre.

So count them among the local horsemen who consider this meet a success, even with a delayed start and some accompanying problems.
