HANOVER, N.H., May 17 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Dartmouth College has received a $35 million commitment to establish The Dartmouth Center for Health Care Delivery Science, President Jim Yong Kim announced today. The anonymous gift will advance a new field of study, harnessing the knowledge and expertise of faculty across multiple disciplines from the arts and sciences as well as from the medical, business and engineering schools.

Dartmouth College President Jim Yong Kim's essay, "Targeting campus drinking" (BDN, Sept. 20) has important news about a nationwide college initiative to curb binge drinking on college campuses. While his collaborative is focused on intervention of college-age students, another similar group is working on prevention of alcohol abuse by children from Grade 5 and up. Both groups are associated with a program at the University of Washington.

Lesotho's initiative is an excellent example of this global trend towards expanding and integrating prevention and treatment efforts," said [Jim Yong Kim]. "The growing availability of affordable AIDS treatment is developing countries is gradually transforming the fight against AIDS. Many nations are now empowered to develop programs that directly confront the epidemic.
"Current prevention, treatment and care efforts are too episodic, ad hoc, and lack the intensity, pace and rhythm needed to make an impact," said Kim. "But if we harness our efforts and employ innovative approaches as these nations are doing, there is no reason that we cannot turn back the tide of this epidemic."

Another college year is starting, and binge drinking is again a prime concern among deans of students around the country. Sad to say, it also remains an attractive matter of interest for many of the students.
The University of Maine and Colby, Bates and Bowdoin colleges all have active campaigns to dissuade students from this dangerous form of drinking.
