Charity poker The Mardi Gras Casino & Resort hosted a Chips for Charity poker tournament Jan. 18. The winner was Kensie Westerfield, playing for the Alzheimers Association, which received a $5,000 contribution from Mardi Gras. All other players received a $500 contribution for their charity, including Kanawha/Charleston Humane Association, Hospice, Charleston Area Alliance/Capitol Area Development Corporation Foundation, Childrens Theatre of Charleston, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Manna Meal, WVU Childrens Hospital, YMCA of Charleston and the March of Dimes. • Caretaker Impedes Mount Desert Burglary

MOUNT DESERT - A would-be burglar remained in custody Wednesday after he was thwarted in his attempt to rob a summer home the day before. According to Mount Desert Police Chief Jim Willis, James Grindel, 43, formerly of Hancock, was arrested and charged with burglary after he led police on a chase around Mount Desert Island on Tuesday morning.

• Settlement Reached in Capital Discrimination Case

A former custodian at Capital High School has settled his racial discrimination lawsuit after a circuit judge dismissed some of his claims. The Kanawha County Board of Education will pay Willis McLemore $15,000, board attorney Jim Withrow said about the case filed in 2008.
