Like legend Eddie Harris, [Joshua Redman]'s funk-jazz knew how to get loose, even dropping away for duets and solos in "Double Jeopardy." Mostly their hybrid worked, except that bass lines came from [Sam Yahel]'s keyboard, not a real ax, so the low end often plowed through Blade's high-hat pockets like Shrek in a china shop. But nuance came elsewhere: On Led Zeppelin's "The Crunge" Redman pulled distortion, reverb and electric squall from his horn with effects pedals, mimicking Jimmy Page's heroics with his own breath.
