JERUSALEM -- A declaration by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Thursday that there was "no alternative" to U.S.- brokered peace talks offered new hope that negotiations will not break down due to a standoff over Jewish settlements in the West Bank.
Abbas did not mention the settlement issue in public comments before a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton at his office in Ramallah that followed two days of direct talks between Israeli and Palestinian leaders.

[Joe Biden] is no [John Hagee]. Rather, he's the kind of Zionist whose support for Israel is "almost genetic" as he put it. He says the United States needs to be a "smart" rather than an "honest broker." He says that Middle East progress comes only when the Arabs know there is "no daylight between us and Israel.
From an Arab perspective one of the most worrying aspects of a Vice President Biden is his stand on Jerusalem. The region is still smarting from [Barack Obama]'s declaration that Jerusalem must remain Israel's "undivided" capital (even though he has since issued a clarification). Now Arabs must contend with the fact that Biden was a co-sponsor of the Jerusalem Embassy Act in 1995. It was a popular bill, adopted by 93-5 in the Senate and 374-37 in the House and becoming Public L...

[Jesus Christ] is risen. Indeed He is risen! I wish you all a Happy Easter full of God's grace. This will be my last Easter with you as I reach the age of 75 and retire. Yet, and as I have said in my last pastoral letter, I shall remain with you in my prayers and shall continue to accompany you in your happy moments and grievances. I shall work with every seeker of justice and peace until all the inhabitants of this land will live in security and tranquility, in the presence of God Almighty, merciful and full of love to all his creatures. For the sake of all our faithful in our Churches of Jerusalem, and all believers from all religions in this land, Jews, Muslims, Christians, Druze and Baha'is, I shall pray, and extend my love to all.

JERUSALEM - A confidant of Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said his government would support a division of Jerusalem, which is reportedly a key component of an Israeli-Palestinian declaration to be made at a U.S.-sponsored Mideast peace conference next month.
As part of recent negotiations between the sides, Deputy Vice Premier Haim Ramon has proposed turning over many of the Arab neighborhoods of east Jerusalem to the Palestinians. Ramon said the Palestinians could establish the capital of a future state in the sector of the city, which Israel captured from Jordan in the 1967 Mideast war.
