[Jerome Iginla] would also become the first Black hockey player to win the Rookie of The Year Award. He was the first Black position player to participate in hockey's greatest tournament championship.
Thanks largely to NHL Diversity program, more than 30,000 boys and girls are playing hockey in cities around the nation. Iginla, who made history two years ago by becoming the league's inaugural Black scoring champion also became its first Black captain.
His efforts also reflect the hard work of pioneer Willie O'[Ree], who joined the Boston Bruins in 1958 as the first Black in the National Hockey League. O'Ree is currently the director of youth development for the NHL.

OCanada, did it ever fill the arena, everyone singing, players with their thick arms draped around one another, fans weeping into their giant red jerseys, surely one of the loudest anthems ever.

In the 1,000-meter event that [Davis] won, [Chad Hedrick] came in sixth. He refused to shake the winner's hand and told reporters, "Shani skated fast. That's about all I'll say." At another point, he said: "I'm happy for Joey [Cheek, the silver medallist].
Shani Davis is a fantastic champion," Wennemars said. "For him, the pressure was high as it could get. Whatever the U.S. (thinks) about Shani Davis doesn't matter. He's the Olympic champion now, so he was right."
Newsbusters.org, a conservative Web site committed to "exposing and combating liberal media bias," posted the headline: "Shani Davis's Gold Medal Makes [Bryant Gumbel] Look Even More Foolish." It continued, "Nice timing, Bryant. Do you need some help removing that foot from you mouth?"

ENOUGH ABOUT CELEBRATIONS
Alex Ovechkin staged a planned goal celebration last week, and the hockey community paused for everyone to a) rejoice about the infusion of creativity and showmanship for a sport that sorely misses it or b) renounce his diabolically selfish and anti- establishment behavior.
