The Amazon.com "What do customers ultimately buy after viewing this item?" results for Bill O'[Reilly]'s Culture Warrior are pretty pointed. Ninety-six percent bought Culture Warrior, 1 percent bought Godless by Ann Coulter, 1 percent bought Rediscovering God in America by Newt Gingrich, and 1 percent bought The O'Reilly Factor for Kids. The remaining 1 percent? They preordered the new Harry Potter.

The Auto Club released their self-titled debut album in 1995. On it were songs that included Cessna's lullaby to his daughter, "Dear Amelia," and tributes to their favorite Denver locales. "Kristin and Billy" features a sing-along chorus about "a waitress named Nonnie / at the 404," while the climax of "Champagne Like a Lady" offers the questionable compliment "well you sure are a looker / like a Colfax hooker." Around Denver, a legend was born. I guess the yodeling was part of the initial sound, but it wasn't really deliberate," says Cessna. "I'm a Slim Whitman fan, and he hits those really high falsetto notes. He's the only person I've tried to copy vocally, so that must be where it came from. SCAC has maintained their unique sound on their last three albums, all of which have been ...

It hasn't been easy. In fact, if keeping a band interesting for 25 years was simple, fewer bands would feature former members of a band you liked better. The Melvins' first drummer lasted about a year, and as many as 13 bass players-from eventual Mudhoney member Matt Lukin to KISS" Gene Simmons-have played in the Melvins. The Melvins became a quartet in 2006, incorporating Los Angeles duo Big Business after a stint working with Jello Biafra. After all, stopping was never an option. [Buzz Osborne], who Crover describes as the hardest working musician he's ever met, says he " can't wait to stop touring so he can make the next record "I think we've just scratched the surface... I have no idea where we'll go, but I imagine that we have a long journey ahead of us, to things I haven't even th...
Before accusing the Philly five-piece of not being quite punk enough, keep in mind that Dead Kennedys legend Jello Biafra guests on the album, as does Chris No. 2 from Anti-Flag. Just out on Metropolis Records-home of the Electric Six and KMFDM-Everybody Make Some Noise! is a celebration of the fun to be had in dark times, typified by "Little Miss Apocalypse" and the shouted refrain "Valentine's Days/ Halloween nights" on "Dead Flowers Forever.
PANSY DIVISION That's So Gay (Alternative Tentacles) In November 2008, Proposition 8 passed in California, amending that state's constitution to define marriage as being strictly between a man and a woman. On March 31, 2009, California queer-punk ensemble Pansy Division released its eighth full-length studio album, reminding its home state and anyone else who would listen that the band is still here, still queer (well, three fourths of it), and still rocks on completely. Early Pansy Division albums, like 1994's Deflowered, had a distinct '60s-era garage-rock feel -- a perfectly acceptable avenue for delivering the raw sex and in-your-face politics that the band has become synonymous with. That's So Gay is definitely so, and with a renewed sense of purpose, Pansy Division cloaks most of ...
Th' Shack Shakers' newest contribution to the Southern Gothic canon is their third full album, Pandelirium, on Yep Roc. In addition to cameos by Reverend Horton Heat, Steve Latanation from Agent Orange, and the iconoclastic Jello Biafra, the album also contains such fantastic tracks as "Ichabod," a wicked barn-burner with overtones of klezmer and polka. After making a convert of Robert Plant (who invited the band on his European tour), they're back in the States, whipping audiences into a religious frenzy beyond that of even the most fervent Pentecostal churches. That snake venom sure works wonders.
