I founded the Trailblazers program with the folks at Edgewood ISD in order to broaden the horizons of well-qualified, low-income San Antonians who have the potential to attend our nation's best universities", said Representative [Joaquin Castro], now the Vice Chairman of the House Higher Education Committee who himself was once a stand-out student at Jefferson High School in the San Antonio Independent School District. He continued, "This was an opportunity for these students to explore the higher education options that are available to them, to bring their positive experiences back to San Antonio, and to start blazing a trail not just for themselves, but for their younger siblings and classmates.

JEFFERSON TWP., Montgomery County -- Jefferson Twp. Local Schools are banking on a community set on remaining an independent school district, but that's shown little support for previous levies to come through and pass an operating levy on Tuesday's ballot.
Voters in 1998 first approved the district's 5.5-mill operating levy and its renewal in 2003, but in the March 2008 primary failed to pass that existing five-year levy. Had it passed, the levy would not have cost taxpayers any additional dollars and would have generated the same amount annually -- $342,000.

Beginning mid-April, several fights broke out between African American and Hispanic students of Jefferson High School. [Antonio Villaraigosa] visited the campus in hopes of easing racial tensions. "There's going to be a zero tolerance for this kind of racial violence and there will be very serious consequences for the people involved because we have to get control of the situation ... we've got to provide a safe passage," he stated during that visit.
In August, however, Crenshaw High School was denied its accreditation, another blow for LAUSD. Several meetings were held, involving parents, students, teachers, community members and members of the LAUSD. During one such meeting, Local District 3 Superintendent Sharon Curry announced that the ball was dropped when the single school plan fo...
