The city needs to narrow its streets and make them feel safer for pedestrians if it wants to shake the notoriety of being named the nation's least friendly city for walking, a professional city planner told the Oklahoma City Council on Tuesday. And establishing pedestrian-friendly corridors is one of the first steps in creating vital street life downtown, developing housing and retail, and ultimately attracting a stronger work force, said Jeff Speck, principal with Speck & Associates in Washington, D.C.
