• Late Blairsville Cyclist Honored at Ohio Memorial

Family and friends of the late Chad Shields, of Blairsville, carried out a fitting tribute to the 34-year-old motorcycle enthusiast earlier this month. Organized by Jeff Antinora of Johnstown, a close friend of Shields and a fellow member of the Plumbers and Pipe Fitters of America, the group of about a dozen gathered at Dean's Diner in Blairsville on Sept. 9 to begin a 100-mile bike ride to a Motorcyclist Memorial near Hopedale, Ohio.

HOUSTON -- A bigger fuss should have been made when Jeff Karstens was overlooked for an All-Star bid. The Pirates right-hander has won five straight decisions and ranks second in the NL with a 2.34 ERA. Karstens is averaging 14.01 pitches per inning, the second-lowest rate in the majors behind Tampa Bay Rays righty James Shields (13.96).

ANAHEIM - A night of offensive heroics culminated for the Angels when new center fielder Steve Finley hit a game-ending RBI single with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning off Brian Shouse, giving the Angels a 7-6 victory Thursday over the Texas Rangers. Finley's line drive through the left side of a drawn-in infield scored Jeff DaVanon with the winning run and got reliever Scot Shields off the hook after Shields, filling in for Francisco Rodriguez, gave up a game-tying run in the top of the ninth.
