With an eye on building audience anticipation, and maybe a little political gravitas, CBS sent its anchor-in-waiting, Katie Couric, on a six-city promotional tour, complete with town meetings. Associated Press reporter David Bauder compared her "listening tour" to Hillary Clinton's, and like the former first lady's sojourns, these were frantically pre-screened to be safe and boring. (A blogger in Minneapolis had his pen confiscated.)
Couric told gossip writer James Brady in Aspen, Colo., she was going out to see "real people," but Couric has been doing something else at tour stops. She's been raising money for local cancer charities at $150 a plate. Since her husband, Jay Monahan, and sister, Emily Couric, died of cancer, Couric has been an active fundraiser for anti-cancer causes. Work...

Last Wednesday, the National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance (NCCRA)-started six years ago by NBC Today Show host Katie Couric after losing her 42-year-old husband, Jay Monahan, to the disease-raised $300,000 specially targeted to increase awareness and screening in New York's African-American community. I applaud their efforts.
* Colorectal cancer (commonly referred to as colon cancer) is the #2 cancer killer of men and women in the U.S. There are approximately 145,000 new cases of colon cancer and 56,000 deaths in the US each year.

Although Belle Vernon Area golfer Anthony Monahan has had difficulty cracking the Leopards' starting lineup, he has no intention of shelving his clubs. Golf is his passion.
Monahan's average score for nine holes is 48, first-year coach Jay Lustig said, which is about 2.5 strokes higher than the final position golfer for matches. Belle Vernon's golfers average from 39 to 45.5 strokes per nine holes.

WASHINGTON, March 1, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Passage of laws requiring insurance providers to cover the costs of colon cancer screenings has stalled over the past two years and advocates are bracing to protect existing legislation in states that currently guarantee access to these lifesaving tests, a coalition of public health associations and medical professional societies reported today. The progress made in passing state-mandated coverage of colon cancer screening tests according to accepted medical guidelines has come to a near halt as state legislatures reconsider their role in the wake of the passage of the federal Affordable Care Act.
Only one state, Hawaii, passed coverage legislation in 2010. Combined with Vermont's legislation passed in 2009, only two states have impro...

It takes a special event to bring all three weeknight broadcast news anchors together.
As in its inaugural edition two years ago, "Stand Up to Cancer" remains such an occasion. The hourlong, celebrity-filled program combining information on the disease with appeals for donations to fund research will involve ABC's Diane Sawyer, CBS' Katie Couric and NBC's Brian Williams when all of their networks air it simultaneously -- along with many other television outlets -- at 8 p.m. Friday.
