  • Many studies have used micro-level data in estimating earnings differentials by gender for college professors. None has studied racial earnings differences for faculty except by employing a dummy variable for race in its regression models. The availability of the 1993 National Study of Postsecondary Faculty has made such a study possible. We use a variant of the Oaxaca decomposition technique suggested by Cotton (1988) and Neumark (1988). Although the salaries of black faculty trail those of their white counterparts at the Associate and Full Professor levels, the reverse is true at the Assistant Professor level. The increased emphasis in recent years on increasing diversification in the racial composition of college faculty are possible explanations.

  • ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) - President Gen. Pervez Musharraf yielded to pressure from the United States on Thursday and said Pakistan will hold elections by mid-February. But he showed no sign of ending a political crackdown, placing opposition leader Benazir Bhutto under house arrest and detaining thousands ahead of a major protest. The move against Bhutto on today came amid a broader crackdown on her supporters, who were planning to rally near Islamabad against Musharraf's emergency rule. Bhutto's party said some 5,000 of its supporters have been rounded up in the past three days, and riot police were out in force in nearby Rawalpindi, the city where today's rally was to take place.

  • ISLAMABAD, Pakistan -- President Gen. Pervez Musharraf yielded to pressure from the United States on Thursday and said Pakistan will hold elections by mid-February. But he showed no sign of ending a political crackdown as the opposition claimed 5,000 of its supporters were arrested to head off a major rally. The White House hailed its ally's pledge to hold the parliamentary vote, which will come just a month later than originally planned. But opposition leader Benazir Bhutto denounced his announcement as "vague" and demanded Musharraf give up his second post as army chief within a week.

  • FAISALABAD, Pakistan - Rifles slung over their shoulders, the guards pacing in front of Naeem Masood's fabric shop glower at anyone who walks by. It's not thieves or vandals that Masood is worried about. He needs protection from assassins. In April, the 29-year-old boyish-faced Pakistani found his father, brother and uncle slumped over in the seats of their car, their faces and chests riddled with more than 60 bullets. All of them were dead, victims of what Ahmadis in their Faisalabad enclave say was a deadly warning from extremists: Renounce your sect or leave the city.

  • ISLAMABAD -- Troops manning a checkpoint Tuesday rescued dozens of students, teachers and staff from a boys school who had been taken captive by militants in the northwest, the Pakistani military said. The brazen abduction in North Waziristan on Monday was part of a string of militant actions in Pakistan's tribal belt, some of which the army says is aimed at distracting it from its offensive against the Taliban in the Swat Valley.
