• Galarraga Loses Perfect Game On Disputed Call

DETROIT - Armando Galarraga of the Detroit Tigers lost his bid for a perfect game Wednesday night with two outs in the ninth inning on a call that first base umpire Jim Joyce later admitted he blew. First baseman Miguel Cabrera cleanly fielded Jason Donald's grounder to his right and made an accurate throw to Galarraga covering the bag. The ball was there in time, and all of Comerica Park was ready to celebrate the 3-0 win over Cleveland, until Joyce emphatically signaled safe.

• Six Words That Make a Difference

Like many people I know, I have followed with interest the recent news story about Armando Galarraga, the Detroit Tigers pitcher, and Jim Joyce, the major league umpire. In early June, Galarraga pitched a nearly perfect game. For 8 2/3 innings, not a single runner reached base against him. But with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, rookie Jason Donald hit a weak ground ball to second base for what looked like a sure final out. Galarraga raced over to cover first and caught the throw. But astoundingly, veteran umpire Jim Joyce ruled the runner safe on a close play. Replays of the call made it clear the runner was out, meaning that Galarraga had been robbed of the distinction of pitching a perfect game.
