SEATTLE - Out on the right field concourse, nothing looks different from the previous decade. Fans still show up with signs and symbols of adulation for Seattle Mariners star Ichiro Suzuki: his name in traditional Japanese symbols, Japanese flags, even the omnipresent Ichi-meter keeping track of his total hits for the season. But that hit meter hasnt clicked over at the same rate in 2011 and, combined with Suzukis advancing age and another 90-loss season from his team, it has led to questions about what exactly Suzukis future is with the only major league franchise hes ever played for. Barring a startling and highly unlikely decision to return to Japan, Suzuki, who will turn 38 in late October, will undoubtedly be back with the Mariners in 2012 and be given every opportunity to remain S...

This case would be very helpful to students, teachers, advisors, and policy makers who are interested in subject areas such as, international retailing, retailing in India, infrastructural development in India, and the effects of a giant multinational retailer's coming to India on its millions of kirana stores (small businesses) and the millions of people who depend upon these kirana stores for their livelihood.

This article analyzes published photographs of Japanese Americans interned in World War II by Dorothea Lange (1895-1965), Ansel Adams (1902-84), and Carl Mydans (1907-2004) in Survey Graphic, U.S. Camera, and Life respectively. Although their work was constrained by the economic and ideological realities of the war's photojournalism, they transcended the medium to provide historians with valuable insights into a controversial chapter in our national history when the government felt it was necessary to curtail civil liberties. In addition to reconsidering the existing scholarship on Lange and Adams, this article explores new ground by analyzing the photojournalism of Mydans. This fresh perspective reveals how photojournalism contributed to the visual construction of race, citizenship, an...

More than any other publication, National Geographic magazine has taught Americans about the world around them. Recently, the magazine's view of the world has become more complex. Since 1995, the magazine has been producing editions published in languages other than English. This raises questions as to how international authences negotiate these "glocalized" representations. By investigating how the National Geographic "The Samurai Way" story resonates with Japanese individuals, this study first addresses the cross-cultural reception of an American text not simply exported to another country, but an American text repackaged for a local foreign authence. It then returns to the process of production of the story in an effort to identify points of intersection and contradiction in the disc...

Bobby Fischer has gone to Iceland, apparently the last country that will have him.
The chess legend arguably among the United States most potent anti-Soviet symbols in the 70s had lately been whiling away his days in a Japanese jail, wanted in America on charges of tax evasion, sanctions busting, and generally being a jerk.

These are all extensions of [Mounia]'s vision and conceptualization drawing upon fashion as" art. Amongst the eclectic collection are her triptych (painting number 7) "Ki," (number 8)" Mo," and (number 9) "No," as well as her "Lumiere De Montage" (number 2) and "Martinique" (number 17). "The haute couture in general provides a sensibility about the colors, movement, fabrics design, especially in Japanese haute couture." She adds. "I am Martinique French Creole and the mettasage of my personal inspiration with the Japanese gives rise to Katamate.

Maybe that's a shame. If [Matthew Barney]'s artistic vision can be imagined as a dense yet oddly engaging map into as-yet uncharted emotional and intellectual territory, then [Alison Chernick]'s Barney documentary, No Restraint, functions as a sort of key. Informative and highly entertaining, the film investigates Barney's inspirations without seeming condescending to viewers or compromising the adventurous spirit of the art itself.
Buy the hype for a little while, because the documentary definitely has its rewards. It's great fun to listen to [Bjork] talk about making the soundtrack, and the songs she's come up with are a perfect aural complement to Barney's visuals. Bjork, who famously swore off films after Dancer in the Dark, does in fact act opposite Barney in Drawing Restraint 9, w...
