Gallaudet University's Board of Trustees voted yesterday to terminate the appointment of Jane K. Fernandes, whose hiring in May as the next president sparked months of bitter protests and divided the country's only liberal arts college for the deaf.
We announce with much regret and pain that after serious deliberation in a special, all-day executive session .. we have voted to terminate Dr. Fernandes' appointment," the board said. "It has certainly been a difficult and trying time for our Gallaudet community. Now is the time for healing. The hope of the Board of Trustees is for our beloved community to come together to work for a stronger and better Gallaudet.

I've never met Jane Fernandes. Nor do I know if she would have made an effective president at Gallaudet University, America's only liberal arts university for the deaf, which revoked her contractlast weekend.
But here's what I do know: The attacks on Mrs. Fernandes reflected one of the very worst trends in American life, extending far beyond the gates of Gallaudet. And it all starts with the term "culture.

WASHINGTON -- The board of trustees of the nation's premier school for the deaf voted Sunday to revoke the appointment of the incoming president, who had been the subject of weeks of protests that at times shut down the campus.
The vote at Gallaudet University came after a daylong closed- door meeting that followed protests by students and faculty members, the board said. Jane Fernandes, the former provost, had been selected in May to take office at the university in January.

The deadline is today for candidates applying to be interim president of Gallaudet University after the dismissal of President- designate Jane K. Fernandes.
The candidates will be interviewed Wednesday and Thursday via telephone by the Interim Presidential Search Advisory Committee, whose 15 members include four students, four faculty and two alumni.

More than a dozen Gallaudet University students organized a sit- in outside the office of President I. King Jordan yesterday as part of their ongoing protest against incoming President Jane K. Fernandes.
The sit-in, which took place on the second-floor hallway at College Hall and included members of the women's volleyball team, lasted for about four hours and was conducted without incident.

Hundreds of Gallaudet University students marched yesterday from their Northeast campus to Capitol Hill, hoping to gain national attention for their efforts to oust incoming President Jane K. Fernandes and change the school's selection process.
The students, including many with painted faces, began their march at about 9 a.m. and were joined by alumni, parents, faculty and leaders of the deaf community.
