  • CINCINNATI (AP) -- To draw visitors, zoos count on gentle giraffes rolling out their long tongues to grasp treats, stingrays gliding through a pool to be petted and the playful tussling of tiger cubs. This year they're also getting help from the recession. Zoos in cities including Cincinnati, St. Louis, Baltimore, Kansas City and Memphis, Tenn., report higher attendance as consumers look for affordable entertainment closer to home.

The zoo has faced financial obstacles and the threat of losing its accreditation over the past few years. But after board members and staff agreed to keep the attraction open in January and February, attendance -- even at discounted prices -- is giving it an extra bump in attendance and revenue.

  • The death of a zoo animal rarely makes national headlines. And when it does, the animal is mourned by zoo officials and visitors as if it were an elderly friend. It's when a zoo has a series of deaths in a short period, as has happened at Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo -- all three of its African elephants, three monkeys, two gorillas and a camel have died since October -- that protesters start gathering at the gates and outside inspectors get involved.

  • Yesterday's trip to the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore made for some fun -- however cold -- findings. Not only were the snowy owls, different sea gulls and pileated woodpeckers out for the bird watchers, but so were the flamingos. The longtime staple of the zoo is an exhibit that visitors can't currently see. The zoo had closed its "main valley" entrance in 2004, which included the prairie dog hill, bear cages, the crane house and the flamingos.

  • SILVER SPRING, Md., Nov. 18 /U.S. Newswire/ -- After lengthy study and deliberation, a Conflict Resolution Committee of the American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA) released a report today upholding a prior recommendation that the two elderly Asian elephants currently housed at the Detroit Zoo be transferred to the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium in Columbus, Ohio. There is no further appeal of this recommendation. This decision supports a previous recommendation by the Elephant Species Survival Plan (SSP) that Wanda, 45, and Winky, 51, be transferred to the Columbus Zoo, which has one of the country's largest zoo elephant exhibits and is accredited by the AZA. Detroit Zoo officials appealed the SSP Steering Committee decision in September and initiated the AZA Wildlife Conservation Manageme...

  • There's one thing that worries zoo directors from San Diego to Syracuse as much as the growing cost of elephant care: Los Angeles. Fulfilling a campaign promise to animal activists, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is expected this month to release an independent study with input from roughly 30 zoo association experts and elephant rights proponents that could determine the fate of a $19 million pachyderm exhibit at the Los Angeles Zoo. The results could determine whether Los Angeles builds the exhibit, expands its existing quarters or follows the lead of such cities as Detroit and San Francisco and sends its elephants to a sanctuary.
