Most of the steps taken by the young Washington Capitals this season have been baby ones. Coach Glen Hanlon is hoping the club now is ready to take one giant step toward being far more competitive in a league now dominated by specialty teams.
When Washington defeated the Los Angeles Kings 3-2 late Wednesday night, four of the game's goals were scored on the power play, and the fifth, by the Caps' Brian Sutherby, was scored short-handed. Washington's two power-play strikes, including the game-winner with 1:03 left, came from defenseman Jamie Heward.

Unlike their last game, the Washington Capitals almost played to the level of their opponent last night at MCI Center.
The Caps gave the high-flying Detroit Red Wings a challenge before falling 4-3 for their seventh loss in eight starts. Defenseman Jamie Heward had a goal and two assists last night for Washington, while Alex Ovechkin continued to streak through the league with his 18th goal and an assist.

The Tampa Bay Lightning recalled goaltender Karri Ramo and defenseman Jamie Heward from the Norfolk Admirals on Sunday.
Ramo appeared in 15 games for the Admirals this season, posting a 4-8-3 record with a 3.48 goals-against average and a .889 save percentage.

Since the second period of a Jan. 16 game in Phoenix, the Washington Capitals were forced to play without two of their top four defensemen. For a team that is wafer thin on experienced personnel, that was a huge loss.
Things started to even out Sunday when Jamie Heward returned from a groin injury and helped the team kill all seven Tampa Bay power plays in a 2-1 victory. Things got even better along the blue line yesterday when the Caps called up rookie Mike Green from Hershey of the American Hockey League.

New York Islanders center Kevin Colley, a New Haven native, had surgery on his broken neck Tuesday for the second time in six days and will remain hospitalized for about a week. Colley's playing status for this season and beyond is undetermined. For now, he is out indefinitely. He broke the fifth cervical vertebrae in his neck, but there is no paralysis.
Colley, 27, was injured Jan. 31 against Washington when he slammed headfirst into the boards while entangled with Capitals defenseman Jamie Heward.

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) - New York Islanders forward Kevin Colley was taken to a hospital with a neck injury Tuesday night after he crashed headfirst into the boards while tangled up with Washington defenseman Jamie Heward.
Colley went to check Heward, who slid his stick between Colley's legs with 1:14 left in the first period. The New York center didn't connect and couldn't slow down or brace himself before slamming into the boards with his head down.

With 27 players slotted somewhere on the roster, the Washington Capitals will be forced to make a series of personnel moves over the next week, including one before tonight's game in Toronto.
Center Dainius Zubrus (groin) is tentatively scheduled to come off injured reserve tonight. Defenseman Jamie Heward (arm) also might return.

Washington Capitals defenseman Jamie Heward sat in a physician's office on Dec. 1, waiting for more treatment on the deep three-inch gash extending from his nose across the left side of his face. Suddenly his cell phone went off.
Jamie? This is Mike, Mike Modano from Dallas. I just heard what happened and I wanted to apologize and see how you were doing," Heward recalled.
