Mr. Sparrow belonged to the American Legion Post No. 280, The Better Business Bureau and The Small Business Association. Mr. Sparrow loved fishing, boating, riding dirt bikes and music, most of all the harmonica and drums. He was owner and operator of Coastal Exterminating. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served in Vietnam and was the recipient of the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart and other commendations.

  • LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Nicole Richie and Joel Madden are parents of a newborn baby boy. Richie says on her Web site that Sparrow James Midnight Madden was born early Wednesday. Sparrow, who weighed 7 pounds, 14 ounces, is the second child for Richie and Madden. Their daughter, Harlow, will be 2 in January.

  • CHESAPEAKE - Mattie Sparrow Bryant of the 2000 block of Wingfield Ave. died Dec. 27, 2006, in Chesapeake General Hospital. Born in Little Washington, N.C., she was the oldest member of Center of Faith Christian Center, Norfolk. Survivors include her husband, David L. Bryant; two daughters, Mattie R. Brooks and Tennese Boyd of Chesapeake; three sons, James Sparrow and Terry Sparrow of Chesapeake and Leo Sparrow of Newport News, Va.; a sister, Willie Bell Barfield of Queens, N.Y.; 25 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by a daughter, Ruth S. Privott.
