James H. White of Buffalo, a pioneering businessman who founded a real estate company that put people in homes across the East Side and who formed his own band at the Colored Musicians Club, died Sunday in Buffalo General Hospital's hospice unit. He was 85.
A native of Brooklyn, Mr. White came to Buffalo in 1956 and bought the Crystal Lunch diner on Broadway a year later. But he soon sold that and built his own restaurant on Jefferson Avenue, where he also started a jobs agency and a real estate company in the late 1950s.

James T. McGrath of Cheektowaga, a retired mechanical engineer and World War II Army veteran, died Sunday in Sisters Hospital. He was 84.
Born in Lowville, Mr. McGrath served during World War II with the 7th Armored Division. He was involved in liberating German prison camps and earned the Bronze Star.

James Ortiz was a senior at the High School of Commerce in New York City when his social studies teacher issued a directive that changed his life.
She pulled me aside and said, 'You're going to college,'" Ortiz recalled. "I hadn't really considered it. My parents' goal was for me to finish high school and take a job, and that's what I was going to do.

James A. Burns, an Army Air Forces pilot during World War II who later was active in the American Legion, died July 16 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Buffalo. He was 89.
Mr. Burns was born in Jamestown and moved to the Buffalo area with his family as a child. His most recent residence was in Amherst.

James J. "Peepers" Mastrodicasa, a retired physical education teacher, died of cancer Tuesday in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, Amherst. He was 67.
An Amherst resident, Mr. Mastrodicasa was born and raised in Buffalo and graduated from Grover Cleveland High School. He graduated in 1965 from Morehead State University in Kentucky, which he attended on a baseball scholarship.

The Rev. Willie James Brown Jr., a senior pastor emeritus at New Covenant United Church of Christ in Buffalo, died Wednesday in Buffalo General Hospital. He was 74.
Born in Laurel, Miss., Mr. Brown served in the Army from 1953 to 1959.

James Goss, a local businessman, died Thursday in his West Seneca home after a long illness. He was 66.
Born in Buffalo, Mr. Goss was a graduate of Lake Shore High School. In 1966, he volunteered for the Army and fought with the 9th Infantry Division during two tours in Vietnam.
