He was a native of Greensboro, N.C., and a resident of Norfolk for most of his life. He was the son of the late James Oscar Atkinson Jr. and Foye Louise Young Atkinson and the widower of Lois Robbins Atkinson. He was a graduate of Granby High School and the Virginia Military Institute Class of 1955, earning a B.S. in civil engineering. He served his country in the United States Air Force. Most recently, he was self employed as a registered professional engineer.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 27, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Lost Nation, where friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 26. Burial will be in Rock Island Arsenal National Cemetery, Rock Island, Ill. Friends also may call after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the church.

He was the son of the late William James Atkinson and Mary Elizabeth Bullard Atkinson. He was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Cora Padon Atkinson; his son, Thomas William Atkinson; granddaughter, Kristen Anne Edwards; brother, Thomas Eddie Atkinson; and sister, Elizabeth A. Orcutt. He was a member of Kempsville Baptist Church since 1950, Friendship Bible Class, life member and former treasurer for 30 years of Davis Corner Fire and Rescue Squad, life member of Knights of Pythias Lodge No. 10. He was retired from Hecht Distributors as a district manager.
