  • The death of Frenchman Jacques Foccart on March 19, 1997, created a powerful impact in French-speaking Africa. Foccart was considered the most mysterious and powerful man in France under the leadership of Charles de Gaulle. He is considered the engine and prime mover behind the success of France's special sphere of influence in post-colonial Africa called Francafrique. Foccart's extreme secretiveness was to make him a legend. His death will likely not be able to lift the ambiguity surrounding the myth and the man.
