  • Jacqueline (Fanney) Ellis, 80, died March 16, 2004, at home in Harrisonburg, Va. She had moved to the area in June of 2003 from Holland, Va. She was born Sept. 9, 1923, in Virginia and was a daughter of the late Arthur Mills and Mattie Fanney. She was a member of the Holy Neck United Church of Christ in Suffolk and was a retired dental assistant and bookkeeper for Dr. L.H. Rawles Jr. She was united in marriage to John Robert Ellis, who preceded her in death in 1995.

  • WINFIELD - Last week, Philip Stowers was running his Huntington law firm, as he had for the past 18 years. On Tuesday, Stowers was sworn in as Putnam Countys new circuit court judge, replacing Edward Eagloski, whom he ousted in Novembers election. Stowers closed his Huntington law firm Stowers & Associates on Jan. 1, and officially began his administrative duties at the Putnam County Courthouse on Monday. He plans to conduct his first hearings Thursday. A backlog of civil cases and 17 criminal cases from November indictments has left him with little choice but to move quickly, he said. She married Thomas Albert Royston on May 18, 1956 and enjoyed 45 years of marriage; he is also deceased. Cecelia spent her entire 40 year career employed by Colorado Springs Utilities, retiring as a Billing Supervisor in 1990.
