JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS The defense will have to get creative to pressure quarterbacks with Paul Spicer starting at left end in place of Tony Brackens, who is expected to miss the season with a knee injury. The team likes Spicer's work ethic but doesn't consider him an every-down player. Look for LB Akin Ayodele, who played end at Purdue, to get some snaps there on third downs. ... The team hopes rookie WR Reggie Williams is a gamer because he has been a nonfactor in practice.

JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS TE KyIe Brady likely will have a diminished role in the offense. Though the club still values Brady, especially as a blocker, it brought in TE Todd Yoder to provide competition. Yoder and second-year man George Wrighster could cut into Brady's time. Last year, Brady had too many drops.... Backup QB David Garrard could be sidelined through training camp after having surgery to address an intestinal disorder. Doug Johnson will be the No. 2 until Garrard is available....

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville Jaguars are headed in a completely new direction.
And Los Angeles doesn't appear to be the destination.

Green Bay -- Green Bay and Jacksonville, two of the National Football League's four or five most disappointing teams, will meet Sunday in Jacksonville.
Losers of five of their last six games, the Packers are favored by 1 1/2 points over the Jaguars, who have lost six of their last seven.

Ask Jacksonville Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew whether he would try to play through a concussion or yank himself from a game, and he'll provide a straightforward answer.
Hide it," the NFL's leading rusher said.

DRAFT DISH: By using their first two picks to shore up the pass rush, the Jaguars may have moved doser to their goal of ending Indianapolis' stranglehold on the AFC South. The coaches compare DE Derrick Harvey to Ravens OLB Terrell Suggs, but they say Harvey has more physical talent. The Jaguars claim to employ a best-player-available approach, but the club has bucked that trend in the past two drafts. Harvey was a bit of a reach-not the best player available-but they needed him.

DRAFT DISH: Facing a severe need at wide receiver, the team appeared to panic and reached for Reggie Williams. Williams is a big target, but he lacks elite speed and is considered by most scouts to be more of a possession receiver. Williams wasn't thought to carry a top-10 grade, and the Jaguars likely could have traded down and still been able to take him later in the first round.
-
TARGETING: The Jaguars have taken a wide receiver in the first round two of the past three drafts. The company line is they won't do it again, but that could be a smoke screen. LSU's Dwayne Bowe has been compared to Steelers WR Hines Ward for his physical style and fearlessness working the middle of the field, and the Jags have emphasized the need to get better production from the slot.
-
DRAFT DISH: Forget the "best player available" philosophy. The Jaguars went strictly for need with their first four choices. Because of his excellent size and reliable hands, TE Mercedes Lewis wasn't considered a reach late in Round 1, but he has so-so speed (4.80 in the 40) and needs to improve as a blocker. [Lewis] likely won't make an immediate impact because Kyte Brady remains the starter and will come out only on passing downs.
