Good supernatural thrillers turn great when they're grounded in a plausible reality: Are the ghosts Of hotel-goers past telling The Shinings Jack Torrance to kill his family, or is he suffering from acute cabin fever? The could-be factor can also make a bad movie pretty good, and Joel Schumacher, that perennial Byron Alien of the film world, again proves himself inadequate to the task of dramatizing some really neat material in THE NUMBER 23. This one's a doozie: Walter Sparrow (Jim Carrey) happens upon a novel that seems to mirror his own life in all its intimate details, all centered on the number 23. Probably no movie at the 12th annual On Location: Memphis International Film & Music Fest - which begins today - is awaited with a greater mixture of anticipation and trepidation than "Better Than Something: Jay Reatard," the first feature-length documentary about the frequently alienating yet oddly beloved Memphis rock-and- roll musician whose increasingly successful career and vibrant, reckless life were cut short by his Jan. 13, 2010, drug overdose at age 29.
We're just wary about how Jay is represented after the fact, even if (the movie) is by people who sort of knew him," said longtime friend, Memphis punk-rock fellow traveler and former Oblivians member Eric Friedl, who appears in the film in footage shot before Reatard's death.

SHINE ON
All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy ... Stanley Kubrick's chilling horror masterpiece The Shining has a couple of playful parodies living in cyberspace that are well worth directing your Web browser to. At our fi rst virtual stop (www.ps260.com/molly/ SHINING%20FINAL.mov), the original fi lm has been edited into a cheesy adoption drama where little "redrum" Danny -- a kid looking for a dad -- fi nds Jack Torrance. It's hard not to laugh at lines like, "sometimes what we need the most is just around the corner." If you're hungry for more get yourself over to www.angryalien.com/ 0504/shiningbunnies.html where you'll see the entire Shining storyline faithfully condensed into a 30-second short reenacted by animated bunnies. What will they think of next?
