John Brunson (Jack) Richardson, 86, of Roanoke, Va., passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, July 25, 2010. Jack was born in Greensboro, N.C., on July 6, 1924, and moved to Roanoke with his family in 1935. He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1942.
During World War II Jack enlisted in the Navy and completed Officers Candidate School and Navy flight training in Pensacola, Fla. He served as a naval aviator and carrier pilot of a torpedo bomber aboard the aircraft carrier, USS Shangri La, as part of the third and fifth fleets in the Pacific Theater. He was engaged in air strikes on Okinawa and Tokyo.

Surviving are three children, Sheila Newton, Stanley E. Richardson and Daniel O. Richardson; four stepchildren, Beverly Turner, Robert Turner, Floyd Turner and Michael Turner; a brother, Charlie O. Richardson; three sisters, Laura Mitchell, Nadine Bell and Katherine Jowers.
