The company founded in 1929 by his father, Joseph J. Gumberg, today is considered a premier real estate development firm, controlling 15 million to 18 million square feet of shopping centers in Pennsylvania and six other states.
The head of a sprawling real estate empire in the Pittsburgh region was accused Thursday in a lawsuit filed by his two younger brothers of siphoning at least $16 million from partnerships that all three own. Andrew and Lawrence Gumberg allege in the 13-count lawsuit that Ira Gumberg -- who controls the 17 Gumberg Family Partnerships worth $500 million, and the real estate management company J.J. Gumberg Co. -- defrauded them out of money by commingling partnerships' bank accounts, while using that money for personal benefit or other businesses.

The younger brother of the head of a sprawling real estate company in the Pittsburgh region has sued the company, demanding the repayment of an outstanding loan. Andrew Gumberg of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., sued J.J. Gumberg Co. in Allegheny County Common Pleas Court, claiming that he is owed about $600,000 of a $900,000 loan he made to the company in 1994.
