ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast - Even after airstrikes pounded holes in his garden, even after fighters encircled his home and stormed the gates, Laurent Gbagbo did not budge Wednesday from the bunker where he remains holed up. The finale of Gbagbo's 10-year claim on Ivory Coast is playing out much like the beginning. The 65-year-old strongman, who made an art of staying in power years past the end of his legal mandate, is now pushing the envelope, fighting for each day, even each hour.

That doesn't mean the listener need indulge in a preprandial sherry or two in order to appreciate what this sophisticated septet is doing. Some tunes might benefit from a familiarity with the folk themes employed by [Michael Reisenauer]'s beloved Brahms. On the other hand, standout tracks like the swelling art song "Coal/Ivory" and the brisk Eastern European folk tune-cum-rocker "The Crook of My Good Arm" are sure to set even the most casually shod foot to tapping. Can't say that I've unpacked every line of Reisenauer's modern- day takes on romantic literature. But in any case, Black Forest (Tra La La), as a Whole, has something to do with a deep-feeling swain and a predestined love that has a little difficulty cohering. And frankly, Goethe himself would probably have smiled at Reisenau...

Having three jobs isn't unusual -- especially in Northern New Mexico where living expenses are high and salaries are low. But Keri Ataumbi has three creative and highly skilled ways of making money. Her work as jeweler, artist, and landscape designer all contribute toward paying the mortgage and putting food on the table. Still, Ataumbi said, at present none of those careers alone could support her. Pasatiempo interviewed Ataumbi in her La Cienega home, which is dominated by a studio-workshop that appears to have once been a living room. Jeweler's benches take up three quarters of her space. An easel stands in one corner, holding a 5-foot-tall painting with a textured surface that evokes the inlay of eggshell and ivory on fine art deco furniture.
