In the good old days, circa 2008, wealthy taxpayers could donate as much money as they wanted to charitable organizations and list it as an itemized deduction. Gradually, however, New York has limited the allowable itemized deduction for charitable contributions. Initially, it was limited to 50 percent of the federal allowable itemized deduction for those with over $1 million in adjusted gross income. In 2010, it was limited further for those with over $10 million in adjusted gross income to 25 percent and 0 percent for all other itemized deductions.
