LEBANON -- Rick Hiteman has spent most of his life training and racing horses in Lebanon, but after the defeat of Ohio Issue 3, he said he might have to change careers or move out of Ohio. It's Black Tuesday, unfortunately, for our industry," said Hiteman, 46, who owns 10 horses. "Gambling dollars have been slowly taken away from us for years. This was our way of getting back in business.
COLUMBUS --The team pushing to bring four full-fledged casinos to the Buckeye state reads like a page from Who's Who in Ohio Politics: former Cincinnati Mayor Charlie Luken is leading the campaign, former Ohio GOP Chairman Bob Bennett is drumming up Republican support, and former state Supreme Court Justice Andy Douglas has been hired to shore up backing in northwest Ohio. Behind them is a well-equipped team of veteran spin doctors, ad makers and campaign strategists: Mary Anne Sharkey, former communications director for ex-Gov. Bob Taft; Bob Tenenbaum, former press secretary for ex-Gov. John Gilligan; Tom Whatman and Rex Elsass, former Ohio GOP directors; Dennis Eckart, a former Congressman and Cleveland area Democrat; and Ron Malone, a longtime public employees labor organizer.

COLUMBUS -- Ohio voters on Nov. 8 will get a chance to send a message about President Barack Obama's federal health care law, even if they don't have the power to exempt the state from the law's requirement that all Americans buy health insurance by 2014 or face penalties. A "yes" vote on Issue 3 would add an amendment to the Ohio Constitution's bill of rights stating that "no federal, state or local law or rule shall compel, directly or indirectly, any person, employer or health care provider to participate in a health care system.
WITH the passage of Issue 3 in Ohio, casinos will soon open in Columbus, Cincinnati, Cleveland and Toledo. This will pose a challenge to the two racetracks in the Northern Panhandle, and to a lesser extent to the racetrack in Nitro. West Virginia lawmakers and the managers of the states four racetrack casinos have long predicted that neighboring states would expand their gambling to casinos. This was why legislators gave local voters the option of approving table games. Now it is time for West Virginia racinos to prove their mettle. They face competition. Gamblers will decide where to play. Unsolicited advice to Ohio: Never rely on gambling money to support operating expenses. As gambling revenues rose, West Virginia resisted the temptation to use the money to expand state government. G...
